Running question

Ok, runners, I miss running. BUT, when I run, my right knee starts to grind between the knee cap and tibia, and then goes into sharp pain that lasts for a few days afterward. Any suggestions?

I am not a runner. I feel that is torture. However a few thoughts. I immediately thought of your gate. Do you wear a certain part of your shoe out sooner that the rest? You may be running a bit funny on that leg. Their are places (shoe stores) that specialize in helping look at your gate and see what shoe/help you need.

OR Maybe tone it down to a walk/short run/walk and see if the warm up and cool down helps.

Another thought on the nuturtion side is to make sure you are getting the right amount of good oils (samon, flax, ) to keep your joints lubricated. This maybe more than you wanted good luck! THis getting old stuff stinks!

I love to run too and have noticed similar problems as I have tried to come back to running after having children (or just getting out of shape). I noticed if I try to build up distance or times a week too quickly that I will have knee problems too. If I build up using a slow program - like no more than 10% increase in mileage per week - then I'm usually ok. If you haven't recently started again, check your shoes - are they old? Also, try focusing on stretching your IT band. I usually lean against a wall with my outside leg supporting my weight and the inside leg stuck out away from the wall behind it, then lean my bum into the wall so that you feel the whole outside length of your thigh stretch.
If all else fails, you can always take some time off to let it heal and then come back. A long time ago I actually saw a doctor for my knee pain and he told me (if I remember correctly!) that it was because my quad and hamstring were not equally balanced for strength and had me do some quad strengthening exercises and kind of ease back into it. So anyway, good luck!
