Bispheno-A (BPA)

Ok scientists, has anyone been able to sort out the mess with BPA? I have read all kinds of things on it, but can't really seem to decide if I really have to throw out my precious Nalgene bottle or not. Has anyone talked to their doctors about it? What are you doing with your baby bottles/water bottles?

Okay, no scientific, professional proof here...but what I've read has convinced me to be a bit more careful and try and avoid BPA products as much as I can! Check out these sites...for some good info.

I personally have made some changes in what we use. I don't think I've gone overboard...but why not take some easy precautions? I mean there are so many things in this world that I can't protect my family from...why not at least protect them from bpa and other things that we can control? :)

I really liked this blog that provided reviews on bpa free sippy cups and bottles and stuff...

I bought my baby the Thermos Foogo sippy and have LOVED it! Much worth the extra money we spent on it...the thing does not leak at all and I love that it is not plastic!

Hi! I'm a first time commenter, but I love your site Megan! It's a wonderful idea.
As far as Nalgene bottles go, I wouldn't use them. Here's a segment from the Today show on plastic: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/21134540/vp/24023514#24023514
I have actually heard Nalgene bottles mentioned by name on two different talk shows, including in this clip (not exactly scientific proof, but they quoted scientific evidence) because they use the type of plastic that contains BPA. Nalgene is now phasing out those type of bottles. Here is another link to check out:http://www.niehs.nih.gov/news/media/questions/sya-bpa.cfm#6
It's hard to know if the media is just being alarmist, but personally I would rather be safe than sorry!

My sister has some really good info on this on her blog. I'll tell her to send you an invite. I think for this next baby I'm just going to use bottles with drop-ins that don't have bpa. I can't see using glass! And I am throwing out our water bottles that are a 6 or 7, just to be safe. Might as well err on the side of caution, even though I hate being paranoid about these things!

My brother-in-law who is in dental school told me this week that BPA is also used in composite fillings. So, not only can we drink it, but for those of us (ME) who have fillings in every molar, we get to suck on it all the time!

I finally found some time to read a little about all of this...I haven't made any conclusions just yet, but I thought the following was worth sharing:

"the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) recently established a Tolerable Daily Intake (TDI) for bisphenol A of 50 micrograms/kilogram bodyweight/day, which represents a safe level for daily exposure over a lifetime.(3) In comparison, the highest transient level of bisphenol A measured in the migration studies, which would not occur daily over a lifetime, would result in exposure to bisphenol A that is less than 1% of the TDI."

Hear is the address to the blog I pulled this from. The author has provided lots of links for further reading.

Also, this site had a lot to say on the issue:
